Rich Motorsport Heritage Continues to Inspire FR-S Evolution

The FR-S continues to evolve. And while it’s hard to improve upon perfection—that was precisely our goal with the development of the Scion FR-S TRD Project Car. Inspired by the stunning Griffon Toyota 86 built by TRD Japan, the FR-S TRD Project Car is a finely crafted vehicle that greatly influences the upcoming Scion FR-S Release Series 1.0.

Announced back in April, the FR-S Release Series draws upon TRD’s rich motorsport heritage, which includes seminal models such as the Toyota 2000 GT, MR2, and the near-mythical Supra, and delivers a powerful and performance-driven experience.

Externally, the Release Series 1.0 and FR-S TRD Project Car appear nearly identical, with slight modifications seen on the project car’s TRD fender aero fins, carbon fiber roof spoiler, and larger three-piece TRD wheels.

Inside and under the hood, however, things are different. The project car utilizes a Garrett turbocharger that cranks stock horsepower up to 400. A TRD big brake kit provides necessary stopping power. While occupants are kept safe and secure courtesy of TRD racing seats, five-point harnesses, and a custom roll cage welded onto the car.

Keeping the vehicle’s weight low was another important factor for the TRD team. To do so, engineers gutted the FR-S of its radio, door cards, back seats, and roof/pillar lining.

Inspired by the TRD Project car, a limited run of 1,500 FR-S Release Series 1.0 vehicles will go on sale this month sporting either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and Dynamic Rev Management® technology.

Each car features a bright Yuzu exterior paint color, custom-designed aero kit, TRD Quad Tip Exhaust System, TRD lowering springs, and Smart Key with Push Button Start. Total MSRP is $28,870 with a manual transmission, or $29,970 with an automatic transmission. The delivery, processing and handling (DPH) fee for all Scion models is $770 and is not included in the MSRP.
